The electric circuit of motorcycle is similar to that of automobile. Electrical circuit is divided into power supply, ignition, lighting, instrument and audio parts.

The power supply is generally composed of alternator (or power supply by magneto charging coil), rectifier and storage battery. The magneto for motorcycles has many kinds of structures according to the different types of motorcycles. Generally, there are two forms of flywheel magneto and magnetic steel rotor magneto. Flywheel type magneto is generally used in small displacement micro and moped. Four magnets are evenly distributed inside the flywheel and rotate with the engine crankshaft. The stator frame is fixed on the crankcase, on which the magneto coil, lighting coil and breaker assembly are fixed. When the flywheel rotates, the magnetic line of force of the magnetic field alternates through each coil, causing the coil to produce induction alternating current . In the magnetic steel rotor type magneto, its structure is opposite to the above, six pieces of magnetic steel are evenly distributed on the circumference of the rotor, the magnetic steel and the rotor are die cast together with aluminum alloy, and the rotor is connected with the crankshaft with a key. There are six groups of coils winding the core in the stator. When the rotor rotates in the stator, the alternating magnetic lines of force generate the induced alternating current through the stator coil.

There are three ignition modes of motorcycle: battery ignition system, magneto ignition system and transistor ignition system. In the ignition system, there are two kinds of ignition: Contact capacitor discharge ignition and non-contact capacitor discharge ignition. Contactless capacitor discharge is abbreviated as c.d.i. C.D.I actually refers to the combined circuit composed of capacitor charging and discharging circuit and SCR switch circuit, commonly known as electronic igniter.

There are various colors of wires in the motorcycle circuit. It is customary to use red wire as the power "+" wire, black wire as the ground wire "-" wire, orange wire as the wire leading to the ignition coil, magneto output current as the white wire, blue wire as the headlamp wire and so on. This is just a common usage for reference.
